It is located in the eastern half of Istanbul, on the western part of the Kocaeli Peninsula, which is technically the Asian part of Istanbul. However, it should be noted that this district does not have a coastline. On March 6, 2008, by incorporating some neighborhoods from \u00dcmraniye and \u00dcsk\u00fcdar, it became one of Istanbul's 39 districts. This district is bordered to the southwest by Kad\u0131k\u00f6y, to the west by \u00dcsk\u00fcdar, to the north by \u00dcmraniye, and to the east and southeast by Sancaktepe and Maltepe.\r\n\r\nThe name Ata\u015fehir emerged when construction companies, due to the suitability of the land on its western side, began their residential and office projects in this area. Numerous buildings and towers were constructed, making the district well-known and transforming it into something akin to an independent city. The Ata\u015fehir Municipality was established after the local elections in 2009. The Ata\u015fehir Municipality building and the district police department are located in Barbaros Mahallesi.
